Matthew turned Professional at age 18 having spent his formative years at Romiley Golf Club where he had begun playing from age 13. At club level Matthew won many Junior titles including the Strokeplay and Matchplay Championships in 1988 & 1989.
With guidance at that time from the Professional, Gary Butler, Matthew began his 4-year PGA training. In 1992 Matthew made the successful move to De Vere Mottram Hall Hotel & Golf Resort. Here under the Head Professional, Tim Rastall, (Former European Tour Professional & now European Seniors Tour Professional 2007) Matthew’s playing career began to flourish. 1998 proved to be Matthew’s most successful season with a win and five runner-up places putting him 5th in the annual Assistants Regional Order of Merit. Other highlights have also included getting through to the Final Qualifying Stages for the 2003 Open Championship at Royal St. Georges.
More recently Matthew’s commitments have focused on teaching and corporate golf day services. Having gained a grade “A” in his swing examination when passing his PGA qualification in 1994 Matthew always knew this aspect of the game was his forte. In subsequent years a Diploma in Sports Psychology with the Newcastle University (1998) were achieved along with accreditation’s in the teaching methods of “Harold Swash” Britain’s Putting Doctor (1992) and “InnerCaddy” – Sports Psychology Lessons for Golf (2005) – endorsed by Denis Pugh – Coach to Colin Montgomerie. Matthew has also attended many National Coaching Conferences at the Belfry
where speakers including David Leadbetter have passed on their extensive knowledge.
With over 17 years experience Matthew has taught and looked after many individuals, groups and multi-national companies who have visited Mottram Hall. Companies including Danish Crown, British Airways, Virgin, FIFA, David Wilson Homes, etc as well as
famous footballing, cricketing and rugby stars who have benefited from Matthews coaching advice.
